What does it mean to be a NYTA member?

When you join the New York Transhumanist Association (NYTA), you become part of a local community of people who are interested in discussing the possibilities for radical improvement of human capacities using advanced technologies. Transhumanism is a growing movement concerned with ethically expanding technological opportunities for all people to live longer and healthier lives, to enhance their intellectual, physical, and emotional capacities, and to enjoy a future of expanded freedom and prosperity.

Do I have to live in New York City to be a member?

NYTA welcomes anyone from throughout the greater New York City area that is interested in learning more about transhuman enhancement of human capabilities and working toward their realization.

How much does it cost to join?

At the present time, there are no dues or fees to become a NYTA member. Some of the activities we provide, such as dinners, movie viewings, seminars, or field trips, could require expenditure. In the future, we may decide to implement membership dues to better accomplish our aims.

Am I required to attend a certain number of meetings?

There is no obligation whatsoever. We encourage regular attendance and participation in meetings and activities because we would like to get to know you better. The more often you attend and the more people you meet in NYTA, the more comfortable you will feel and the more you will derive from your membership.

Do you do more than just talk? Do you ever take action?

This is our strategy:

Gather knowledge, so that we can… Share knowledge, so that we can… Increase membership, so that we can… Become a potent organization, so that we can… Shape education curricula, so that we can… Influence public policy, so that we can… Expand transhuman opportunities for everyone, so that we can… Radically improve our own human capacities, so that we can… Enjoy an unlimited future!

When was NYTA founded?

In early 2002, a few people who lived in New York and nearby New Jersey began discussing the possibility of forming a local organization of transhumanists. The first public meeting of the New York Transhumanist Association (NYTA) was held on October 24, 2002. We currently meet once a month and are excited by the number of new people who attend every meeting and express interest in joining NYTA.

Does NYTA have a parent organization?

We are an affiliated chapter of the World Transhumanist Association. Our chapter is an autonomous organization, and members of NYTA do not have to join the WTA, although we encourage them to do so. We also have a friendly relationship with the Extropy Institute and its local chapters.

How can I learn more about transhumanism?

By attending NYTA meetings and conversing with other members; by reading the literature available at meetings; by reading the books on our Recommended Reading List; and by visiting the website of our parent organization, the World Transhumanist Association.
